A WINDY, WINDY, DAY! We have been spoiled with the nice weather the past 5 years, but we are not complaining. Even though the wind was blowing around 30 mph, we did not have rainy or cold conditions. The 10th Annual Halstead Cross Country Invitational was held for the 5th year at Wedgewood Golf Course. The small hills and grassy surface at Wedgewood provided for a nice challenging course. Competition was good again this year, as around 500, high school and middle school runners participated.

Overall, I was pleased with the effort of all our runners! I felt the majority of team members were focused mentally. Running on the home course provided added incentive, and many of our runners had their best times of the year. We are showing improvement. We had a very positive and successful meet, and need to build on it as crunch time of the season approaches. The middle school runners have continued to show improvement, and did a great job.

A big thank you goes out to all the people who helped in any way running off the meet. Your time and effort made the meet run smoothly, and your work was greatly appreciated. Thanks Wedgewood Golf Course for the use of your facilities, and a special thank you to John Weber for allowing people and schools to park on his land.

It was nice to get out of the practice routine and compete in a meet. As usual, the runners were anxious and excited to see how they stack up against area competition, and to find out if they made the most of their off-season and pre-season workouts.
It was a great day to run! The weather was not ideal this year, with temperatures in the 80’s and high humidity’s. We’ve had worse conditions to run in at Clearwater, so no complaints. This meet does not keep team totals, and allows the runners to choose between two races. The high school girls had to choose between a two mile and a 4K, the high school boys had to decide between a two mile and 5K race. Competition was good! Several of the top high school runners in the state attended

Overall, I was extremely pleased with the efforts of our runners. We did have two middle school runners win their races. Everyone had been working hard in preparation for this meet, and seemed mentally focused during the races. After a meet you get an idea of where you stand in comparison to other area runners, and as a whole, we aren’t satisfied at where we are. We challenge the runners to use this meet as motivation for improving next week on their times. Effort in practice and mental toughness are the two areas which the runners can really control that will impact how they run.

The Lady Dragons were unable to score a run. Christa Henning had the only hit for the entire game, a single. Errors plagued the Dragons from the get go costing two runs in the first inning. The Dragons were able to hold off the Mustangs scoring until the sixth inning. The Mustangs had two outs but continued to make runs on Dragon errors, giving the Mustangs two more runs, 4-0. The seventh inning was a run rule with the Mustangs scoring 5 more runs and winning the game 10-0. Rock Creek now 19-6 for the season. The errors got us off to a bad start said Coach Wilson, we just could not hit.

The Honk Parade preparations started Friday in the parking lot of the high school preparing the two school vans for the journey. Not only did parents and fans decorate the vans, but signs were made and hung along the route leading to Hiway 50. Halstead was a very busy place that morning,
A funeral was planned to roll down Main Street at the same time, 11:30. Out of respect for the family, the Honk Parade waited until Police Chief Matt Neal and Fire Chief Jim returned from the funeral. The
parade made its way down Main at 11:40.

An impressive crowd of patrons turned out. People lined Main Street with anticipation of cheering the ladies on to
a State win. Many parents brought the entire family, it was common to see the family van parked with the doors open and
the radio play during the wait. As the police and fire truck made their way down to First & Main. Patrons began tooting
their car horns as the ladies moved along Main Street. The two vans full of Lady Dragons were stopped at 1st & Main
and the pickup truck full of cheerleaders pulled up to the side of the first van. The
cheerleaders jumped out of the back of the truck and performed to the recorded music of the Dragon fight song.
The lady Dragon softball team gathered outside of the vans to enjoy the festive performance of the cheerleaders. Patrons
circled about the vehicles and cheerleaders as the chant and dance filled the moment with a spirit of pride for the
team, and their accomplishment of a great season. When the cheerleaders finished their routine, the crowd that had
gathered around applauded with great enthusiasm, yells of "Go Lady Dragons" and "Take State" were just a few
of the shouts fired out.

The cheerleaders loaded up into the bed of the pickup. Parked on the side on Main Street was a Halstead Fire truck and
as the softball team started to move north, the water canon launched a stream over the heads of the cheerleaders and
players as they proceeded on their journey to Manhattan.

It was a pep rally and send off that the ladies will remember for life. As they departed, they knew they had their work cut out
for them for the next two days. Coach Wilson made it clear that the Lady Dragons were one of eight teams remaining in
the state and that the competition would b fierce.

The Lady Dragons were hot from the get go, scoring three runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Stephanie Drake started with a single . Rachael Phillips was walked, with Christa Henning making the RBI. Abrie VanSteenburg was abble to bring in two runs with a single. This first inning would be the Dragons only scoring for the remainder of the game. In the 5th inning, the Raiders scored a run by Molly Mcfarland by an error on the Dragons. The 7th inning was a real nail biter, the Dragons were ahead 3-1, Lynn Nicaise of the Raiders was walked. Jena Standlee sacrificed a bunt to advance Nicaise to 2nd. Now the Raiders were at the top of their batting order, the tension was high for the Dragons. McFarland made a single to score, 3-2. The game had reached a an uncomfortable feeling for the Dragons, up to bat was Brenna Rhuems, she singled , McFarland ran for home plate with the attempt to tie the game! The drive was deflected off Allie Jankord's glove, Stephanie Drake recovered the ball and with great accuracy threw it to Victoria Roberts. Robert's aligned just to the inside of the third base line turned counter clockwise stepping with her mitt firmly and driving into McFarland with a tag. It seemed like eternity before the umpire made the call, Out at home! Halstead wins! Victoria Robert's said, " I squeezed that ball so hard, I was not going to drop it, no way. Stephanie's throw was right on." Coach Wilson said, "It just don't get better than that, what a way to end game one at State!"
366 photo(s)
5/29/2009
Album ID: 772284

They came out in the first inning and took a 1-0 lead and never looked back from that point. Winning the first game, and the first ever game against Nickerson in seven innings 5 to 1. In the second game we rallied from a 2 run deficit to eventually take the lead and then both teams were in a standoff at 6 to 6 from the 6 inning until the top of the 10th inning when the Lady Dragons ripped three doubles and scored three runs to win the ball game 9 to 6 in 10 innings. The Lady Dragons are 4-0 with the rest of the week off before Hesston comes to town on Tuesday and then traveling to Collegiate on Friday.
